London and SE Qualifier

Newlands Corner 6th July 2008

On 6th July the WSRC SJ team competed at the London and SE qualifier at Newlands Corner club field.

It was a 2 round competition, 2'6 in the first round and 2'9 in the second round. The course was very spooky and caused a lot of problems, in the first round there was only one jump without a filler and it wasn't even jump one!

First to go for the club was Georgina on Bay and she battled to get him round the course but picked up some faults on the way. Sheri was next and jumped a really good round and just had an unfortunate 4 faults. Charlotte was next and her horse slipped and frightened herself and was unfortunately eliminated. Suzi and myself were also eliminated which was disappointing for both of us. The other team were doing much better with both Val and Sonia jumping excellent clear rounds and Georgina on her second horse just picking up 8 faults.

It was very wet, and the rain got heavier, and the course got slippery. Georgina started us off with a good clear on her first horse. Sheri again jumped another good round with just 4 faults. Charlotte decided not to jump again as the going was getting worse, however myself and Suzi were determined to do better. She jumped well and retired on a good note, I however started well but got eliminated again at the 3rd for last fence. Val and Sonia jumped well, both finishing on 4 faults, and Georgina on her second horse did a great clear.

At the end of the 2 rounds one of our teams were eliminated, but the other team ended on 12 faults and were placed 3rd which was an excellent result. The team have now qualified for the championships which are at the beginning of October.

Thanks to everyone that took part and congratulations to the qualifying team.

3rd placed team
Sheri Johnson - Calico
Val Taylor - Jack
Sonia Chapman - Robin
Georgina Nott - Raj

Georgina Nott - Bay
Charlotte West - Libby

Novice Horse Trials National Qualifier

Borde Hill 22nd June 2008

Robin's Round Up

I knew something was amiss when the proper event horses were bypassed and my slave brought me in from the field, it was far too early. The slave then proceeded to put the silly knotted balls into my mane, which I took a dislike to. Luckily my friend Jack then arrived and we were off in the lorry.

Upon arrival I was allowed out of the lorry where further polishing was done to my coat, I thought I looked good to start with a nice pale chestnut colour (for anyone does not know me I am actually pink). Luckily my slave decided to try a different method of warming up for the dressage and just canter round a few minutes before the start of the test in an attempt to wake me up, rather than spend ages perfecting the movements. Anyway got that over and done with, the slave seemed quite pleased. At least it meant that I could start jumping, in the coloured pole thing I lulled her into a false sense of security by jumping beautifully and then having a good look at some nasty planks. However, I was not naughty enough to stop or hit them just give the slave a scare. Finally, the cross country after being spooky in the showjumping the slave did not give me any chance to do the same on the cross country. Luckily I was catching the horse in front so was able to charge along taking strides out to scare her in a different way!!

I was particularly proud of Jack and Basil's performance in the dressage as they both played their owners up, well done. Daisy however, did a pretty good test to achieve a very competitive score. On to the showjumping, where Basil and Daisy jumped clear and Jack had a pole (I had a word with him about that on the way home). Then all three flew around the cross country each picking up a few time penalties but importantly no cross country penalties. So the team completed the event on a very competitive score.

A good day was had by all, with the team finishing 4th only a couple of points behind the winner's so we are definitely closing the gap, roll on next year.

Special thanks have to go to Sheri for being cross country steward and Jacqui for dressage stewarding. Also thanks to Kathy for picking up the dressage sheets and rosettes.

National Senior Novice Dressage, and L & SE Dressage

14 June (run by Elstead RC at their field)

Thank you everyone for your support to the club on Saturday for the Team Dressage, we were not placed but everyone did pretty well. I arrived at Elstead showground around about 10.30 and looked out for my two teams. Went for their numbers and checked the board only to see that my 09.36 rider Lynn Roberts had W/D beside her name. I thought this very unusual as I am sure if she had not been able to come she would have let me know, then a couple of people said that maybe she had decided to do the 4.10 riding test instead and I of course thought yes that must be it. Anyway... we carried on wih the rest of us Louise's Rhea doing her usual very nice calm workmanlike test, but somehow the judge did not seem to think so although at 26 (that's Rhea not Louise.).she is a little stiff but that should not have been reflected in the Riding Test. Christina Davis's Blackberry did a very nice rodeo first test and Jane Leaning's Connie also had a bit of a flid, which made me think that perhaps we should be entering into western riding stuff and not dressage otherwise she did a nice test ! Sheri Johnson's mare Callie went nice and calmly although preferred to do a bit of stargazing! Sally Ede bought two identical horses called Rosie because the first one did a not very good Miss Piggy toss the mane thing and then in the riding test the judge stopped her to say that was the best test she had seen all day and got the highest mark of the day!! Well done Sally & Rosie, Charlotte West's Libby went really nicely in her riding test. Suzi Hopkins very impressive Connemara Charlie did a nice test too, but we seemed to be quite outmatched.

We were not placed as a team but everyone came, and we all had a good day Elstead field has a nice atmosphere and as always thanks Penny for doing a good job of organising and thanks also to Annie Denton for doing the times etc..

So to continue, at 4.30 Lynn had still not arrived so I thought I had better contact her when I got home but events carried me to quite late in the evening and I never got around to it, but... Sunday morning my phone rings and its Lynn (who's blonde by BTW) saying she cannot get into Elstead's field and there does not appear to be a show, has she got the wrong place, no Lynn, worse, just the wrong day...!!! I heard later that, she had to unhitch her trailer and turn it around because if you know Elstead once you have approached the gate there is no way out but back and for a blonde well.. I rest my case.

Area Team Quiz

11th February 2008

I don't know how many of you out there had enough of a classical education to even attempt to translate "Veni, vidi, vici"? Its generally rumoured to be what Caesar said as he landed in Britain, I believe, & means "I came, I saw, I conquered". Which is entirely applicable to the Quiz again this year (except it decidedly wasn't "I", but "we"!).

All three of us who've been taking part for West Surrey over the last few years still find it quite exciting to actually go. The other two involved (namely Vicky Palmer & Kathy Merrick ) were asking me when it was due to be held before I had to lean on them to go with me again (which must be a good sign!) - my sincere thanks to both of you for your input once again, ladies.

The venue (The Watermill near Dorking) is quite good for this sort of thing, with good food available from early evening for those who take it seriously (you can't think on an empty stomach!), and we get put in a separate area of the bar (so we can bicker amongst ourselves about the answers without disturbing the grown-up customers!). There's a bit of a party atmosphere to this event too - it's the first time each year we all get to meet each other, really - certainly since before Christmas, so that's something to look forward to as well.

Chipstead Riding Club, and, more specifically, Jackie, once again came up with a new form of question to torture us with - this year it was "name the points of the foot" with lines 1 to 10 pointing to different parts of a diagram of the underneath of a hoof. This actually got us of to a really bad start, as Kathy was so mortified she only got 9 out of the 10 right, she immediately went into a bit of a decline (her excuse, with which we agreed, was that one of the lines didn't seem to be pointing to anything much at all. And it did give the other Clubs that got all 10 right a bit of a lift to start the competition with!). However, she visibly rallied after Vicky found 14 of the 13 words hidden in the word-search we had to complete simultaneously with rounds two & three. Vicky also shone on the questions on racing venues, here & in the States, so we were up & running once more.

Jackie decided this year to only include six rounds rather than the eight she's bravely sorted out in the past, so, before we knew it, it was all over. And yes, we did win again - I have to say rather comfortably this time (against the run of previous years where we had to work for it). Scores were fairly evenly spread over the Clubs competing, which included Ardingley RC who were competing hors concours (does that apply to a quiz?!) with, bravely, only two team members.

So once again I'm the proud holder of the trophy with all the little shiny shields on to be polished (only because the other two won't take it!) - I'll try to remember to bring it to the AGM for an outing so you can all appreciate it (the trophy, not my polishing!).

And if anyone's interested in getting another team together for West Surrey, you'd be very welcome - it is good fun - & you know the pressure will be on us, not you! You need three of you, one with no horsey qualifications, one with a very low level only, and one unrestricted. The Quiz is traditionally held about this time of year, so you can start mugging up now, & let me know after Christmas so I can put an entry in for you.
